Using Spoonflower Designs in Your Own Home

One of the overlooked aspects of designing for Spoonflower, is the ability as a designer to use your designs in your own home. Several months ago, I purchased a duvet cover with my Hibiscus design in navy. (It also is available in light green.)

And I continue to get such joy seeing a design I created on my own bed. There’s really no feeling quite like it. (No photo of my own bedroom - I’m still redecorating.)

But it’s more than just seeing my design. It’s that my own designs are in the vivid colors I love. So often when I have tried to purchase home decor items commercially, I could find only muted colors. I understand why companies do that, it’s what the majority of people like. But I am not one of them. So I have been thrilled to be able to decorate with bright, happy colors.

I will be purchasing another set for my bedroom soon. Decisions, decisions! I showed these possibilities to my husband a couple of days ago:

I showed each design to my husband one by one, explaining that I was considering getting a new duvet and shams. After each one, he exclaimed, “Ooh, I like that!” I asked him to choose one. He replied that I was being mean by asking him to choose. Haha! I’ve decided the sloth and toucan is out for the moment, because it’s new and I haven’t created any secondary designs to go with it. But on down the line…. I will admit it really is a tough decision, because I like all of my designs, but some are better suited for a duvet cover than others. That’s why I like to utilize the mock-ups.

Why Spoonflower Is Great For Interior Decorators

Spoonflower is an amazing resource for interior decorators. First, there are thousands upon thousands of designs to choose from, from thousands upon thousands of designers. While it’s a lot to sift through, a decorator can certainly find just the right thing for their clients. This may not be true when choosing from among massed produced items. I know that for myself, when trying to choose the perfect design for my own home from massed produced home decor, I ended up having to settle. Not really a great feeling.

Next, while any design you choose may not be exactly one of a kind because anyone can purchase it, you can be certain your choice is far more unique than any purchase from Target, Amazon or the like. And the fabric quality on the items I have purchased - duvets made from 100% Italian Cotton Sateen and Petal Signature Cotton fabric that I use for quilting - is wonderful!

Lastly, for those who are environmentally conscious, Spoonflower is a print on demand company, which is much better for the environment. Resources are used only when there is a purchase, as opposed to mass-produced items.

All of these aspects do lead to a greater cost than mass produced products. The king sized duvet covers are $187.20 USD during the current 20% off sale. (Definitely wait for a sale!) But you are receiving an environmentally friendly, unique, quality product, and supporting an individual artist to boot.
